The benefits of partnering with an insurance FMO
Whether you’re a veteran of the insurance industry or just getting started you might be curious about what an FMO is and how it can benefit you. So, let’s get started.

What is an insurance FMO?
A field marketing organization (FMO) is a company that provides independent agents and agencies with extra support and tools to grow their business and make their lives easier. FMOs help support insurance agents and carriers in various ways.

What does an insurance FMO do?
Back-office support
It can be difficult to figure out who you can contact for questions, sales support, case management and more – especially if you offer multiple carriers. That’s where an FMO comes in. You can come directly to your FMO for everything you need for all the carriers you offer, because we’re your back-office support.

Tools and technology
FMO’s provide access to quoting tools and supporting technology, as well as product information and marketing materials, for all our product lines (annuities, health insurance, life insurance, and Medicare).
Advanced contracts
Most insurance carriers have production requirements that can be difficult to meet – but when you work with an FMO, our organization meets the production requirements for you, enabling you to work with more carriers and earn more money. Plus, some carriers will only work directly with FMO’s, pushing agents who want to offer their products to choose an upline.

Simplified contracting
URL offers multiple lines of business with over 100 top national carriers – making it easy for you to get contracted with the right carriers all at once.
Open release policy
As an independent agent the last thing you want is to accidentally become captive, so this one’s a big one. Not all FMO’s offer an open release policy (allowing you to take your business wherever you want, whenever you want) like we do. We’re proud of our open release policy, helping you maintain your independence.

Who owns my book of business?
This depends on the FMO you’re partnering with. When you partner with URL you keep your book of business.
How does an FMO make money?
FMO’s save agents and carriers time and money, so we’re paid directly by the carriers for the services they offer (including recruiting, training, commissions, application assistance, etc.). However, not all FMOs are created equal. Some will also keep a portion of your commissions as a fee for services provided. At URL, you keep 100% of your commissions. We also have options to pay hierarchies and agency splits as needed.
How to find the best FMO
When you’re researching FMO’s you should consider the following questions to help make the right choice for your business.
- How long have they been in business?
- Have you checked their reviews?
- What product lines do they offer?
- Would you have a dedicated representative?
- Do they have an open release policy?
- Who would own your book of business?
- How much commission will I earn?
