Did You Know: Plan Letters for GI Rights

Guaranteed issue (GI) rights, also known as Medigap protections, ensure that you can buy a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy without being denied coverage or charged higher premiums due to pre-existing conditions.

If you were eligible for Medicare (Part A and/or B effective dates) prior to January 1, 2020, you are eligible for Plans A, B, C, F, K and L.

If you were eligible for Medicare (Part A and/or B effective dates) after January 2020, you are eligible for Plans A, B, D, G, K and L.

Some plans will offer additional plan letters for GI rights. For example, Capital Blue Cross and UHC allow enrollment into Plan N.

You can enroll your clients using a GI right as early as 60 calendar days before the date their health coverage ends, but no later than 63 days after their health coverage ends. Pro tip: If you are taking an online application and it is requiring you to answer health underwriting questions, please double check the Original Medicare effective dates to make sure you are selecting the correct Plan letters for the GI opportunity based of those dates.

These plans provide various levels of coverage, and the availability may vary by state. If you have any specific questions about these plans or need help choosing one, feel free to ask!
